Where it came from
The Mountain card from the Collectors' Edition, released in 1993, occupies a distinct place in the history of Magic: The Gathering. As part of a non-tournament-legal boxed set, this release was designed to provide players with a complete collection of the game's earliest sets—Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited—in a standardized, gold-bordered format. It served as a retrospective of the game's initial growth, allowing enthusiasts to own iconic early artwork that had become difficult to acquire on the secondary market.
The artwork for this specific card features the classic landscape illustration synonymous with the base sets of the game. Designed by the original creative team at Wizards of the Coast, the aesthetic sought to evoke the high-fantasy tradition of the early nineties. While the gold border ensures these cards remain distinct from tournament-legal editions, the series is widely appreciated by collectors for its role in preserving the foundational visual identity that defined the game's inception.
