Where it came from
The 'Opposition' card from the 2002 World Championship Decks represents a unique moment in Magic: The Gathering history, where Wizards of the Coast reproduced the winning decks from the previous year's world tournament. This specific card was a centerpiece of the 'Blue-Green Opposition' archetype, a dominant control strategy that leveraged the card’s ability to tap down opponent permanents, effectively locking them out of the game. These decks were printed with gold-bordered backs and signature facsimiles of the players who piloted them, designed to provide fans with a tangible piece of competitive history.
Originally appearing in the Urza's Destiny expansion, the card was designed to push the boundaries of blue control mechanics. Its inclusion in the 2002 commemorative decks honors the strategic prowess of the top-tier players of that era. Because these cards were explicitly marked as tournament-legal only in specific non-sanctioned events, they were received by the community as accessible pedagogical tools that allowed players to study and replicate the sophisticated tactical decisions made by professional champions.
