Where it came from
The Zombie token card was released as part of the 2002 Magic Player Rewards program, an initiative by Wizards of the Coast designed to incentivize regular tournament play and reward loyal participants. During this period, the company distributed promotional cards and tokens to players based on their sanctioned play history, helping to bolster local game store communities and maintain player engagement between major set releases.
The artwork for this specific token was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic artists in the early history of Magic: The Gathering. Rush aimed to capture the classic, decaying aesthetic of high-fantasy undead creatures, utilizing his signature style to ensure the token felt cohesive with the broader visual identity of the game. It was received favorably by collectors and players alike, serving as a functional utility piece that brought a distinct, professional polish to gameplay at the kitchen table and in tournament settings.
