Where it came from
The Squid token was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine Commander set. These tokens are produced by Wizards of the Coast to support gameplay mechanics in Magic: The Gathering, specifically for cards that create creature tokens during matches. As a utility piece, the Squid token serves as a visual representation of a creature on the battlefield, reflecting the set's theme of a multiversal invasion.
The design of this specific token was created to match the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Magic: The Gathering universe. While token illustrations are often collaborative efforts within the Wizards of the Coast art department, they are crafted to align with the overarching visual language of the expansion. Players generally receive these through randomized Commander decks or supplemental booster packs, valuing them primarily for their functional role in organized play.
