Provenance

Where it came from

The Squid token was introduced as part of the Magic 2015 core set, released by Wizards of the Coast in July 2014. These tokens were designed to represent creature permanents generated by specific card effects during gameplay, such as the ability on the card 'Chasm Skulker.' The set aimed to refresh the core gameplay experience, and the token designs were crafted to align with the evolving artistic direction of the game, emphasizing clear visual identification for players during high-stakes matches.

The illustration for the Magic 2015 Squid token was created by artist Igor Kieryluk. Known for his work across the Magic: The Gathering catalog, Kieryluk focused on capturing a bioluminescent, deep-sea aesthetic that fit the creature type's mechanical identity in the water-themed portions of the set. Upon its release, the token was well-received by the player base for its evocative art style, which helped differentiate it from the more standard fantasy creatures found in earlier core sets.
