Where it came from
The Squirrel token, numbered 18 in the Double Masters expansion, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2020. This set was designed specifically to provide players with reprints of powerful and highly sought-after cards from the history of Magic: The Gathering, featuring a premium draft experience. Tokens are a functional necessity in the game, representing creatures created by the effects of other cards, and are included in booster packs to facilitate gameplay.
The art for this particular iteration reflects the whimsical and often humorous depiction of squirrels within the game's lore. Created by illustrator Lars Grant-West, the design emphasizes the creature's energetic nature while maintaining the cohesive visual language of modern Magic tokens. Since its debut, the token has been well-received by players for its clear utility and the characterful aesthetic that defines the game's long-standing tradition of token design.
