Provenance

Where it came from

The Squirrel token, numbered 11 in the Modern Horizons 2 token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in June 2021. As part of a set designed specifically for the Modern format and high-powered play, this token was created to support various mechanics introduced or revisited in the expansion, specifically cards that generate Squirrel creature tokens, such as Chatterfang, Squirrel General.

The card features artwork by illustrator Randy Gallegos, who utilized a warm, woodland aesthetic to reflect the creature's whimsical nature. While tokens are functional accessories rather than collectible cards in the traditional sense, this particular design was well-received for its crisp, clean visual style that maintains consistency with the Modern Horizons 2 aesthetic, quickly becoming a staple for players building tribal Squirrel decks.
