Swamp

Released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion, this Swamp is a quintessential example of the set's thematic commitment to an eternal, icy winter. Designed to evoke a frozen, desolate wasteland, the artwork moves away from the traditional, lush, or decaying imagery usually associated with black-aligned lands in Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique for being the 'third' set of the original Ice Age block, released over a decade after its predecessors to complete the thematic arc of a world locked in a glacial epoch.

The illustration by Douglas Shuler captures the stark, harsh environment of the Coldsnap setting, favoring bleak, monochromatic textures over dense vegetation. Shuler, one of the original artists from the game's inception in 1993, utilized his signature style to depict the land as a cold, inhospitable terrain rather than a swampy bog.
