Swamp

The 2003 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a way for players to experience the high-level tournament play that defined the competitive Magic: The Gathering circuit. These decks were exact, card-for-card replicas of the main decks used by the top eight finalists at the 2003 World Championships in Berlin, Germany. They were intended to be educational tools and mementos rather than standard booster product, featuring distinct gold-bordered backs and silver-foil signatures of the players on the front to ensure they could not be used in sanctioned tournament play.

The Swamp card from this set specifically features the iconic artwork by Rob Alexander, originally commissioned for the Portal Second Age expansion. Alexander's work is celebrated for its evocative use of light and color, and his landscapes became a staple of the game's aesthetic during this era. In the context of the 2003 decks, these basic lands were included to maintain the integrity of the professional deck lists, preserving the exact visual identity of the competitive environment while serving as a snapshot of the game's evolution in the early 2000s.
