Terror

Terror was released in 1993 as part of Magic: The Gathering's Limited Edition Alpha set, the very first print run of the collectible card game designed by Richard Garfield. As a common instant spell, it quickly became a staple in black-aligned decks, serving as one of the game's most efficient removal tools by destroying non-artifact, non-black creatures. The card was designed to embody the color black’s mechanical identity, emphasizing death and decay within the game's tactical framework.

The card features iconic artwork by Ron Spencer, whose visceral, shadowy style helped define the darker aesthetic of early Magic sets. Spencer’s illustration was intended to capture the sudden, chilling nature of the spell, moving away from traditional fantasy art toward a more grotesque and haunting depiction.
