Terror

Terror was first printed in the Alpha core set for Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a foundational removal spell for the black color identity. Its function is to destroy non-black, non-artifact creatures, reflecting the color's inherent bias toward decay and destruction. By the time it was included in the 2003 Mirrodin set, the card had become a staple of the game, representing a classic design philosophy that prioritized tactical conditional removal over unrestricted power.

The Mirrodin version of Terror features illustration by Pete Venters, a prolific artist who contributed extensively to the visual language of the game throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Venters' depiction of the spell captures the sudden and grim cessation of life, aligning with the dark, visceral tone of black-aligned magic. The card was well-received by players of the era for its utility, though its inclusion in the Mirrodin set provided an interesting tension, as the set's heavy focus on artifacts naturally limited the card's effectiveness compared to its performance in other environments.
