Provenance

Where it came from

Terror was first printed in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, quickly establishing itself as a foundational card within the game's black color identity. By the time it was reprinted for the Mirrodin expansion in 2003, it had become one of the most iconic removal spells in the game's history, known for its efficiency in destroying non-artifact, non-black creatures. The card represents a core pillar of strategic deck-building, acting as a benchmark for creature-destruction effects for over a decade.

The Mirrodin version of the card features artwork by the illustrator Puddnhead, who opted for a visceral, nightmarish depiction consistent with the metallic and often grotesque aesthetic of the Mirrodin plane. This iteration moved away from the more traditional, gothic horror motifs of earlier versions, instead leaning into the surreal, industrial horror that defined the set's block narrative. The artwork is noted for its high-contrast color palette, which helped distinguish the card within the visual landscape of the Mirrodin expansion.
