Terror

Terror is one of the most iconic spells in Magic: The Gathering, first appearing in the Alpha set of 1993. It was designed as a staple removal card for black decks, offering a efficient, low-cost way to destroy non-artifact, non-black creatures. The version from the Duels of the Planeswalkers set uses the distinct, atmospheric illustration by Adam Rex, whose work during this era often leaned into dramatic, high-fantasy realism.

Adam Rex’s interpretation of Terror captures the visceral, unsettling nature of the spell, moving away from the more literal interpretations found in earlier printings. By the time it was included in the Duels of the Planeswalkers promotional set, Terror had long been recognized as a benchmark for black mana efficiency. While it was eventually rotated out of core sets for being too powerful at its mana cost, it remains a foundational piece of Magic history, celebrated for its simple, brutal utility in the game's early meta.
