Provenance

Where it came from

Terror was first introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, quickly becoming a fundamental removal spell that defined the black color identity. By the time it appeared in Fifth Edition in 1997, it was a long-established staple of the game, valued for its efficient, low-cost ability to destroy non-artifact, non-black creatures. The card was designed to give players a reliable way to answer board threats, grounding the game in tactical trade-offs and reinforcing the inherent weakness of black magic against mechanical constructs.

The illustration for the Fifth Edition version was created by artist Quinton Hoover. Hoover’s style was characterized by a distinct, sweeping line work and a focus on emotive, almost theatrical figures, which contrasted with the grittier or more abstract art found in later sets. His depiction of Terror captured the visceral, terrifying nature of the spell’s impact, helping to cement the card's iconic status among players who appreciated the aesthetic evolution of the early game.
