Where it came from
The Circle of Loyalty was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a mythic rare legendary artifact, it was designed to anchor the set's Arthurian-inspired aesthetic, serving as a physical manifestation of the Camelot-style ideals prevalent in the lore of the plane of Eldraine. The promo version, carrying the collector number 9s, was issued as a specialized alternate-art release, reflecting the game's shift toward highly stylized, collectible card variants that emphasize the thematic roots of the expansion.
The art for this cycle of cards was developed to evoke the high fantasy tradition, focusing on iconography associated with chivalry and courtly romance. The design aims to integrate the card's mechanical function—providing benefits for knight creatures and cost reduction for legendary spells—with its narrative role as a central pillar of the plane's society. Upon its release, it was noted for its intricate frame design and its place within a broader initiative to offer premium, visually distinct versions of key cards for dedicated players and collectors.
