Where it came from
The Wolf token, appearing as number 13 in the Modern Masters 2015 set, was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to support the mechanics of the expansion. In Magic: The Gathering, tokens are auxiliary cards used to represent creatures created by spells or abilities during gameplay, and this specific iteration was designed to integrate visually with the set's broader aesthetic of refined, high-fantasy illustrations.
The artwork for this token was executed by illustrator Nils Hamm, an artist known for his atmospheric and textured style. Hamm’s design for the Wolf leans into a grounded, somber color palette, emphasizing the primal and nocturnal nature of the creature. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its cohesive look, becoming a staple utility piece for those utilizing cards like Garruk Relentless or similar token-producing effects within the limited environment of the set.
