Goethes Werke: Hamburger Ausgabe in 14 Bänden. Autobiographische Schriften, 3 / textkritisch durchgesehen von Erich Trunz, kommentiert von Herbert von Einem

The Hamburger Ausgabe, or Hamburg Edition, was initiated in the post-war period to establish a definitive, scholarly reading edition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s complete works. Published between 1948 and 1964 by Christian Wegner Verlag, the series was designed to balance rigorous academic accuracy with accessibility for the broader public. Erich Trunz served as the general editor, overseeing the text-critical review process that remains a standard for Goethe studies to this day.

This specific volume, focusing on autobiographical writings, was edited with scholarly commentary by Herbert von Einem. The design ethos of the collection emphasized clear, readable typography and a functional, elegant binding, reflecting a mid-century German intellectual movement to restore and canonize the nation’s literary heritage. Upon its release, the Hamburg Edition was widely praised for its comprehensive annotations and reliable texts, quickly becoming the primary reference for both students and academics.
