Chant Grégorien. Le Vendredi-Saint Les Répons Des Ténèbres

This recording of Tenebrae responsories for Good Friday was produced by Decca as part of their dedicated series documenting the Gregorian chant repertoire. It features the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, a pivotal figure in the twentieth-century restoration of authentic chant performance practice. The recording was captured at the abbey, capturing the unique acoustics of the monastic space and the choir's signature legato phrasing and rhythmic fluidity.

The release reflects the mid-century effort to preserve and disseminate the Benedictine tradition of plainsong. Dom Gajard was a scholar of the Paleography Musicale and an advocate for the Solesmes method, which emphasizes the nuance of the original neumatic notation. Upon release, this record was widely regarded by musicologists and liturgical scholars as a definitive sonic reference for how these centuries-old responsories should be interpreted, serving both as an instructional tool and an immersive liturgical experience for listeners worldwide.
