Where it came from
Recorded in the mid-20th century, this release features the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard. Solesmes is globally recognized as the center for the revival of Gregorian chant in the modern era, with Gajard serving as the choirmaster for several decades. These recordings were essential to the abbey's mission to preserve and disseminate the authentic performance practice of the liturgy.
The release, distributed by Decca, sought to capture the solemnity and acoustic nuance of the abbey's basilica. Dom Gajard emphasized a fluid, oratorical style of singing that focused on the natural rhythm of the Latin text rather than a metronomic beat, a stylistic choice that became the definitive standard for Gregorian chant scholarship and performance throughout the 20th century.
