Provenance

Where it came from

Preparation of Rites was first introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in the Hidden Arsenal 3 set in 2010. It serves as a specialized support spell for Ritual Monster decks, specifically designed to bridge the gap between a player's deck and hand by allowing them to search for a level 7 or lower Ritual Monster and a Ritual Spell card simultaneously. This functionality addressed a significant mechanical hurdle for Ritual-based archetypes, which traditionally struggled with the high resource cost and deck consistency required to summon their monsters.

The version from Premium Gold: Return of the Bling, released in 2015, features the distinct 'Gold Rare' treatment characteristic of that set. This specific rarity was intended to provide a premium aesthetic to popular competitive cards, using gold-colored foiling on the card borders and text box. As a staple in competitive play for years, the card has been widely received as a fundamental utility piece, appreciated for its ability to generate card advantage while thinning the player's deck.
