Where it came from
Oltretomba emerged in the early 1970s as part of the flourishing Italian fumetti neri genre, a category of adult-oriented horror comics that pushed boundaries in both content and tone. Published by Edizioni ErreGI, the series was designed to capitalize on the popularity of dark, gothic narratives, providing readers with sensationalist stories often centered around macabre themes and supernatural entities. Like many of its contemporaries, the series was intended to provide inexpensive, pocket-sized entertainment for a mass audience interested in transgressive storytelling.
The visual language of Oltretomba relied heavily on the stark contrast and gritty aesthetic characteristic of the era's photo-comics and illustrations, favoring moody atmosphere over technical polish. Issue number 5 continues the series' established tradition of weaving pulp horror tropes into short, punchy vignettes. While the creative teams behind these issues were often anonymous or prolific ghost-writers, the design philosophy prioritized immediate visual impact to stand out on the crowded newsstands of the period, securing its place as a recognized staple for collectors of Italian horror pulp.
