Where it came from
Oltretomba Collezione was a long-running Italian horror comic series published by Ediperiodici during the 1970s. Issue #80 reflects the broader aesthetic of the era's 'fumetti neri,' which leaned heavily into gothic atmosphere, suspense, and macabre storytelling. These pocket-sized digests were designed for affordability and mass-market consumption at Italian newsstands, serving as a staple of the countercultural pulp fiction scene that flourished in post-war Italy.
The series relied on a house style defined by stark, high-contrast black-and-white ink work, typical of the creative teams working under publisher Giorgio Cavedon. Artists in this stable often prioritized atmospheric tension and dark themes to captivate a demographic interested in transgressive, supernatural tales. While the individual creators were frequently obscured by pseudonyms or collective house branding, the work remains a significant artifact of Italian popular culture, showcasing how international horror tropes were synthesized for local audiences.
