Where it came from
Rico was released in 2014 as part of the Pop! Movies line by Funko, coinciding with the theatrical debut of the DreamWorks animated feature Penguins of Madagascar. The figure captures the character's signature look from the franchise, emphasizing his wide-eyed, slightly manic expression and his role as the team's unpredictable munitions expert. The design adheres to the standard Pop! aesthetic, featuring the oversized head and stylized proportions that define the brand's approach to licensed pop culture characters.
The figure was produced during a period of significant expansion for Funko as they secured partnerships with major animation studios to capitalize on the popularity of film-based merchandise. Designed by the Funko creative team, the figure was intended to appeal to fans of the Madagascar franchise who appreciated the comedic personality of the penguins. Upon its release, it became a standard entry in the growing collection of DreamWorks figures, praised by collectors for its faithful representation of Rico's unique visual character traits.
