Where it came from
The Bird token with collector number 1 from the Magic 2012 core set was produced by Wizards of the Coast as a utility component for gameplay. In the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, tokens are non-card objects used to represent creatures created by the effects of other spells or abilities. This specific token was designed to accompany cards such as 'Battle Screech' or various planeswalker abilities that generate 1/1 white Bird creature tokens with flying.
The artwork for this iteration was created by the illustrator Kev Walker, a longtime contributor to the game known for his distinct, gritty fantasy aesthetic. Walker’s depiction focuses on a solitary, sharp-featured avian, prioritizing clear visual readability on the tabletop. The design aligns with the standard white-bordered or double-sided token formatting typical of the 2011 era, intended to provide players with a functional and easily recognizable game piece during matches.
