Where it came from
The Bird token, bearing the collector number 2 from the 2016 Commander set, was produced by Wizards of the Coast as a utility piece for Magic: The Gathering gameplay. Released in November 2016, this token was designed to represent creatures summoned by specific cards within the Commander preconstructed decks, such as those featuring the 'Partner' mechanic which defined the product's innovation that year. It serves the practical necessity of tracking board state during complex multiplayer games.
The artwork for this particular token follows the established aesthetic guidelines for Magic: The Gathering supplementary products, focusing on a clear, recognizable depiction of a bird to ensure visual distinction on the battlefield. Illustrators for the 2016 Commander tokens were tasked with creating functional art that remained consistent with the game's high fantasy style. While individual tokens from these sets are widely utilized by players for their utility, they are considered standard secondary components rather than standalone collectibles.
