Where it came from
Dark Confidant was originally printed in the Ravnica: City of Guilds set in 2005, featuring artwork by Ron Spencer. The card was designed as a tribute to Bob Maher, the winner of the 2004 Magic Invitational tournament, who earned the right to have a card created in his likeness. The illustration captures the grim, high-risk philosophy of the character, whose ability allows a player to draw an extra card each turn at the cost of life equal to its mana value.
The Modern Masters version, released in 2013, serves as a high-profile reprint of this iconic black creature. It retains the original design and artwork, maintaining its status as a staple in various competitive formats. The card is widely celebrated for its efficiency and unique balancing mechanic, which forces players to weigh long-term card advantage against the immediate physical cost of their own resources.
