Where it came from
Dark Confidant was originally printed in the Ravnica: City of Guilds set in 2005, designed as a mechanical homage to the Magic Invitational winner Bob Maher. The card's ability, which allows a player to draw an extra card at the cost of life, reflects a high-risk, high-reward philosophy that became a staple of competitive play. The Modern Masters 2015 version features the iconic illustration by Scott M. Fischer, which depicts the advisor in a brooding, shadowy aesthetic that captures the dark influence of the Orzhov Syndicate.
The 2015 reprint was released as part of a curated set designed to provide players with access to powerful staples for the Modern format, which had seen the card's value rise significantly over the previous decade. By featuring new, high-quality art while maintaining the card's original mechanical identity, Wizards of the Coast aimed to stabilize the card's availability. It was well-received by competitive players who valued its efficiency and power, solidifying its status as one of the most essential black creatures in the game's history.
