Where it came from
Dark Confidant was originally printed in the 2005 expansion Ravnica: City of Guilds. The card was designed by Wizards of the Coast to honor Bob Maher, the winner of the 2003 Magic Invitational, who earned the right to have a card designed in his likeness. The illustration by Ron Spencer depicts a dark, cloaked figure reflecting Maher's request for a card that offered powerful utility at a personal cost.
The Ravnica Remastered version, collector number 323z, features the classic artwork updated for this retrospective set. As a staple in competitive formats like Modern and Legacy, the card is highly regarded for its ability to provide card advantage while maintaining the aggressive tempo necessary for black-aligned decks. Its inclusion in Ravnica Remastered serves as a tribute to its enduring influence on the game's competitive landscape.
