Where it came from
Dark Confidant originated as a rare card in the Magic: The Gathering expansion Ravnica: City of Guilds, designed by Ron Spencer. The card was famously modeled after professional player Bob Maher Jr., who earned the right to design a card after winning the 2003 Magic Invitational. The artwork features a mysterious figure in a hooded cloak, reflecting the character's thematic role as a powerful but self-damaging source of card advantage within the black color identity.
While the card has appeared in various reprints and special frames, the specific inclusion of 'Dark Confidant' within a Final Fantasy-themed context is a reference to custom-made or proxy expansions created by the fan community. These projects typically re-skin established mechanical designs from original trading card games to feature art and lore from the Final Fantasy franchise, allowing players to integrate their favorite characters into familiar gameplay structures.
