Where it came from
Dark Confidant was originally designed for the 2005 Magic: The Gathering expansion Ravnica: City of Guilds. It was conceptualized as a tribute to Bob Maher Jr., the winner of the 2003 Magic Invitational, who earned the right to have a card created in his likeness. The card mechanics, which allow players to draw cards at the cost of life, were intended to reflect Maher's aggressive yet calculated playstyle and have since become a defining staple of the Black color identity in competitive play.
The art for the original iteration and its various reprints, including this version from Foundations Jumpstart, focuses on the aesthetic of the Orzhov Syndicate. Illustrators have consistently leaned into themes of dark mysticism and occult bargain-making to capture the card's essence. This specific printing serves as a functional reprint, maintaining the classic design and utility that has made the card a mainstay in formats like Modern and Legacy for nearly two decades.
