Where it came from
Dark Confidant, originally printed in the 2005 Magic: The Gathering set Ravnica: City of Guilds, holds a distinct place in the game's history due to its connection to professional player Bob Maher. As part of his victory in the 2004 Magic Invitational, Maher earned the right to design a card, resulting in a creature that allowed players to draw extra cards at the cost of life, effectively capturing his high-risk, high-reward playstyle.
The Final Fantasy Promos iteration, numbered 94s, represents a modern crossover aesthetic that integrates the dark, intricate art style characteristic of Magic's legacy with the iconic visual language of the Final Fantasy franchise. These promotional cards were released to engage fans of both properties, utilizing the recognizable Dark Confidant mechanical design to serve as a bridge between the strategic depth of card gaming and the aesthetic sensibilities of Japanese role-playing game iconography.
