Where it came from
Dark Confidant was first introduced in the 2005 Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion. The card was designed by Wizards of the Coast as a powerful tribute to Bob Maher, the winner of the 2003 Magic Invitational tournament. In accordance with tournament tradition, Maher collaborated with the game's design team to create a creature that reflected his aggressive, high-stakes playstyle, resulting in an iconic card that trades life points for card advantage.
The Ravnica Remastered version, bearing collector number 71, serves as a modern reprint that maintains the original spirit of the card while updating its presentation for a contemporary audience. By featuring the classic effect that punishes players for their greed, this iteration reaffirms the card's status as a staple of competitive play. The art and design continue to evoke the gritty, urban atmosphere of the Ravnica plane, honoring its long-standing legacy within the game's history.
