Where it came from
Hymn to Tourach was originally released in the 1994 Fallen Empires expansion, serving as a powerful black discard spell that quickly became a staple of early competitive play. The Anthologies set, released in 1998, acted as a retrospective boxed product designed to showcase iconic cards from Magic: The Gathering’s formative years, allowing newer players to acquire cards that had become difficult to find.
The artwork for this specific version maintains the evocative and somewhat gritty aesthetic of the mid-1990s era. Illustrators for the original set, such as Quinton Hoover or Anson Maddocks, were tasked with capturing the dark, thematic nature of the game’s lore. Hymn to Tourach remains well-regarded by collectors for its utility and its place in the history of black-aligned control strategies.
