Where it came from
Hymn to Tourach was originally released in the 1994 set Fallen Empires, serving as a defining card for the Black color identity within Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a powerful discard effect that highlights the game's focus on resource denial. The Pro Tour Collector Set, released in 1997, served as a curated retrospective of the game's early competitive history, designed to commemorate the decks and cards that shaped the burgeoning professional tournament scene.
The artwork for this particular iteration of the card utilizes the original illustration by Quinton Hoover. Hoover was a foundational artist for the game, known for his unique, flowing linework and emotive figures. His design for Hymn to Tourach captures the dark, thematic essence of the spell, portraying a figure enveloped in swirling shadows. Upon its release, the card was widely recognized for its high power level, leading to its inclusion in these commemorative sets as a centerpiece for competitive play.
