Where it came from
Hymn to Tourach was originally introduced in the Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 1994, quickly becoming infamous among players for its powerful discard mechanic that forced opponents to lose two cards at random. The card is steeped in the lore of the Dominarian plane, depicting a ritualistic chant dedicated to Tourach, a figure of dark influence. Its design reflects the chaotic and often brutal nature of black-aligned magic within the game's color pie.
This specific printing originates from the 2022 Secret Lair Countdown Kit, a premium limited-edition product released by Wizards of the Coast. Designed to celebrate the history of the game, the art for this version was updated to align with the distinct, stylized aesthetics characteristic of the Secret Lair series. Upon its release, the inclusion of such a legacy-staple card in this format was well-received by collectors who sought to combine functional, high-utility cards with the exclusive, refined artistic direction that defines the Secret Lair brand.
