Where it came from
Hymn to Tourach was introduced in the 1994 Magic: The Gathering expansion Fallen Empires, a set noted for its dark, flavor-heavy narrative focusing on the internal strife of the continent of Sarpadia. The card represents a core piece of black-aligned disruption, reflecting the set's thematic emphasis on sacrifice and the decay of once-great civilizations through its punishing discard mechanic.
The 38c variant features artwork by Quinton Hoover, who provided several illustrations for the set. Hoover utilized his signature romantic, flowing style to depict the chaotic influence of the dark deity Tourach. Upon its release, the card became a defining staple of the format due to its efficiency, and it remains a significant piece of early game history that helped establish the power level of black mana cards in competitive play.
