Where it came from
The Pro Tour Collector Set was released in 1997 to commemorate the inaugural professional Magic: The Gathering circuit. These boxed sets contained deck lists piloted by the top players at the 1996 Pro Tour, allowing fans to play with cards that mirrored the competitive landscape of the era. The cards themselves feature gold-bordered backs and distinct face designs, intended for casual play and collection purposes rather than tournament use.
Counterspell has been a staple of the game since its inception, originally illustrated by Mark Poole for the Alpha set. As a fundamental defensive tool in blue decks, it represents the core identity of Magic's counter-magic mechanics. The version featured in this collector set carries the legacy of the high-level tournament environment from the mid-nineties, capturing the aesthetic and strategic importance of one of the game's most recognizable spells.
