What it does

Flying; banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

Before a woman marries in the village of Sursi, she must visit the land of the Mesa Pegasus. Legend has it that if the woman is pure of heart and her love is true, a Mesa Pegasus will appear, blessing her family with long life and good fortune.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Mesa Pegasus was released in 1994 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Introductory Two-Player Set. Designed to serve as a foundational product for new players, this set provided a simplified introduction to the mechanics of the game during its rapid rise in popularity. The creature itself embodies the high-fantasy aesthetic that defined early Magic, functioning as a basic white-aligned flying unit that offered newcomers a straightforward lesson in combat evasion.

The card features the distinct illustrative style of Melissa A. Benson, whose work contributed significantly to the iconic look of the game's earliest expansions. Her rendering of the Mesa Pegasus emphasizes a classical, storybook interpretation of mythical creatures, which was characteristic of the game's initial art direction. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the burgeoning community as a reliable, entry-level staple that helped establish the core identity of the white color in the game's evolving color pie.
