Where it came from
Stasis was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the very first print run of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Richard Garfield, the game was conceived as a portable, expandable experience that blended strategic depth with collectible variety. This particular card was intended to represent a state of total temporal and physical inertia, serving as a powerful control piece that forces players to forgo the untapping phase of their turn.
The card’s iconic, ethereal artwork was created by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and celebrated early illustrators for the game. Rush utilized a distinct, surreal style to depict the heavy, stifling nature of the enchantment, which has since become a hallmark of the game's early aesthetic. Over the decades, Stasis has maintained a reputation as one of the most controversial and iconic cards in Magic history due to its ability to fundamentally alter the pace of a match, often frustrating opponents by bringing game progress to a complete standstill.
