Where it came from
Released in late 1993, the International Collectors' Edition was a non-tournament-legal boxed set produced by Wizards of the Coast. It was designed to provide players with a way to access high-value cards from the initial Alpha and Beta sets, featuring a gold-bordered back and square corners to ensure they could not be used in competitive play. Scrubland, a dual land representing both white and black mana, was a cornerstone of early strategic deck-building.
The card artwork was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific early contributors to the game. His style captured the gritty, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the game's identity during its inception. While the International Collectors' Edition was initially met with mixed reviews due to its inability to be used in sanctioned tournaments, it has since become a cherished artifact for collectors who value the history of the game's foundational mechanics and artistic evolution.
