Selesnya Sanctuary

Selesnya Sanctuary is a member of the 'bounceland' cycle, originally introduced in the 2005 Ravnica: City of Guilds set and later reprinted in the Commander 2018 collection. These lands were designed to represent the administrative districts and unique landscape features of the plane of Ravnica, where the Selesnya Conclave is characterized by its deep connection to nature and communal growth. Mechanically, the card forces a player to return a land to their hand upon entering the battlefield, a trade-off intended to balance its ability to produce two colors of mana.

The artwork for this specific printing was created by John Avon, one of the most prolific and celebrated landscape illustrators in the history of the game. Avon sought to capture the lush, overgrown architecture of the Selesnya guild, utilizing his signature style of vibrant, sweeping light and ethereal depth. His depiction of the sanctuary as a serene, tree-integrated structure was highly regarded by players for its ability to transform a functional, utilitarian game piece into an evocative piece of fantasy environment art.
