Provenance

Where it came from

The Island card from the Limited Edition Beta set was released in October 1993 as part of the foundational expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Following the limited print run of the Alpha set, Beta was produced to meet overwhelming player demand while correcting minor printing errors and card back alignment issues. This version of the Island is one of several artistic variations released in the set, designed to represent the basic land type essential for generating blue mana within the game's mechanics.

The artwork for this specific Island was created by Christopher Rush, a cornerstone artist in the early years of the game. Rush utilized a stylized, vibrant approach to landscape illustration that became iconic to the early aesthetic of Magic: The Gathering. His work was well-received by players for its clarity and evocative nature, helping to establish the visual language that defined the game's collectible card format during its inception.
