Where it came from
Solemn Simulacrum, affectionately known by players as 'Sad Robot,' was originally designed by Jens Thoren to honor his 2002 Magic Invitational victory. As the winner, Thoren was given the opportunity to work with Wizards of the Coast designers to create a card that would be printed into the game, resulting in a construct that became a staple of artifact utility due to its ability to draw a card and fetch a land upon entering the battlefield.
The 2015 Commander printing retains the classic artistic direction established by Greg Staples, who illustrated the original version. The artwork depicts a lonely, metallic figure wandering a desolate landscape, perfectly capturing the somber tone suggested by the card's name. This version was released as part of the 2015 Commander preconstructed deck series, maintaining its status as a highly reliable workhorse in the Commander format that continues to see frequent play today.
