Where it came from
Solemn Simulacrum first appeared in the Mirrodin set in 2003, designed by Jens Thoren to honor his invitation to the Magic Invitational tournament. Its utility as a reliable mana accelerator and card-draw engine made it a staple in various formats, leading to its inclusion in the Magic 2012 core set as a reprint to provide players with a consistently useful artifact creature.
The card’s iconic illustration, created by artist Greg Staples, depicts the construct with a somber, stoic presence that matches its functional namesake. The design was praised by the community for its mechanical elegance and its ability to fit into nearly any deck composition, ensuring that it remained a highly sought-after piece for players who value board stability.
