Provenance

Where it came from

Solemn Simulacrum first appeared in the Mirrodin set in 2003, designed by Jens Thoren as an invitational card after he won the 2002 Magic Invitational. The card, affectionately nicknamed 'Sad Robot' by the community, was conceptualized as a versatile utility creature that provides both ramp and card advantage, cementing its status as a staple in the Commander format for two decades.

The Neon Dynasty Commander version, released in 2022, features artwork by Donato Giancola that reimagines the construct through a futuristic, cyberpunk lens. Giancola adapted the original design to fit the aesthetic of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, blending the classic mechanical sorrow of the character with the high-tech, neon-drenched visual language of the set.
