Where it came from
Solemn Simulacrum, often affectionately referred to as 'Sad Robot' by the Magic: The Gathering community, was first introduced in the Mirrodin set in 2003. It was designed by Jens Thoren, the winner of the 2002 Magic Invitational, who earned the right to have a card created in his likeness. The illustration depicts a lonely automaton wandering a desolate landscape, a visual theme that has remained consistent through its numerous reprints, including this iteration from the 2023 Commander Masters set.
The card is widely regarded as a staple in the Commander format due to its utility in ramping mana and drawing a card upon its destruction. Its design philosophy centers on resource consistency, making it a reliable inclusion for a diverse range of deck archetypes. The Commander Masters version, numbered 973, features the traditional aesthetic while updating the card to the modern layout and foiling standards expected of premium set releases, maintaining its status as one of the most recognizable utility artifacts in the game's history.
