Where it came from
Solemn Simulacrum first appeared in the Mirrodin set in 2003, designed by artist Greg Staples. The card was conceptualized as a tribute to Jens Thoren, the winner of the 2002 Magic Invitational, who chose to create a card that represented his playstyle. The design features a silent, metallic automaton, capturing a sense of melancholic utility that has made it a staple in various deck archetypes for two decades.
The version from Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, numbered 872, utilizes the iconic original illustration by Greg Staples. This release was part of a broader initiative to reprint classic, highly functional cards for the Commander format, ensuring they remain accessible to players. The art direction emphasizes the somber, solitary nature of the construct, maintaining its status as one of the most recognizable and widely played artifacts in the history of the game.
