Where it came from
Solemn Simulacrum, affectionately known by players as 'Sad Robot,' first appeared in the Mirrodin set in 2003. It was designed as a versatile artifact creature that provides both resource ramp and card draw upon death, making it a cornerstone of the Commander format. This particular iteration from Modern Horizons 3 Commander features updated, high-fidelity art that retains the iconic melancholic aesthetic established by the original artist, Greg Staples.
The design of the card is attributed to Magic: The Gathering lead designer Mark Rosewater, who created it as a tribute to Jens Thoren, the winner of the 2002 Magic Invitational. Players often reflect on the card's enduring relevance, noting how its mechanical simplicity and utility have allowed it to remain a staple in deck-building for over two decades. This specific printing celebrates the card's legacy by reintroducing it within a modern supplemental set, ensuring its accessibility for contemporary players.
