Where it came from
Solemn Simulacrum first appeared in the Mirrodin set in 2003, designed by Jens Thoren as an Invitational card to honor his victory at the 2002 Magic Invitational tournament. The card features a construct known as a 'Sad Robot' due to its mournful aesthetic and utility, becoming one of the most iconic utility artifacts in the game's history. It was designed to provide both resource acceleration and card draw upon its departure from the battlefield.
This specific iteration from the Secret Lair Drop series features a stylistic departure from the original, utilizing the unique artistic direction of the drop to reimagine the construct. Secret Lair cards are curated, limited-release versions of existing staples, often showcasing experimental or high-profile artistic talent. This version reflects the ongoing tradition of reinterpreting classic Magic cards to appeal to collectors who value aesthetic variation over the original technical illustration.
