Where it came from
The Spirit token, numbered 22 in the Commander 2015 set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in November 2015 as an accessory for the preconstructed Commander decks. These tokens were included to represent battlefield entities created by specific card abilities, such as the Orzhov-themed cards found in the 'Plunder the Graves' or 'Call the Spirits' decks. At the time of its release, the token served a functional role in gameplay, ensuring players had a physical marker for ephemeral creatures produced by effects like those of the commander Daxos the Returned.
The artwork for this token features a monochromatic, ethereal aesthetic designed to blend seamlessly with the flavor of the Commander 2015 set. The illustration emphasizes the ghostly, intangible nature of the Spirit creature type, utilizing high-contrast lighting to convey a sense of spectral presence. While specific individual artists for token cards are frequently credited collectively within the set's broader production documentation, the design was intended to provide a clear, recognizable visual shorthand for players during the complex board states characteristic of the Commander format.
