Provenance

Where it came from

The Cat token was released in 2015 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Commander 2015 product line. Specifically, these tokens were packaged within the Call the Spirits preconstructed deck, designed to support mechanics that generate creature tokens during gameplay. Tokens serve as functional proxies for the creatures created by various spells and abilities, ensuring players can track board states during complex multiplayer sessions.

The card features an illustration by Nils Hamm, a frequent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering art catalog. Hamm opted for a stylized, ethereal aesthetic that aligns with the game's high-fantasy tone, utilizing atmospheric lighting and distinct brushwork to differentiate the token from standard card stock. Upon its release, the token was well-received by the player base for its evocative art, which provided a more atmospheric visual than the generic creature tokens common in earlier sets.
